Chemical engineering is the branch of engineering concerned with the design, construction and operation of machines and plants that perform chemical reactions to solve practical problems or make products. It’s all about changing raw materials into useful products that are used safely by millions of people on a daily basis.

Understanding how to alter the chemical, biochemical or physical state of a substance, engineers are employed across a wide variety of sectors including pharmaceuticals, energy, water, food and drink, materials, oil and gas, biotechnology and consultancy.

Chemical engineering job roles include project engineering, design engineering, operations engineering and research & development engineering. A chemical engineer could be inventing, designing, constructing, operating or controlling industrial processes for a wide range of products form plastics to enzymes, on which everyone’s standard of living depends. If you are bright, a good communicator, motivated, able to work both on your own or as part of a team and love a challenge, chemical engineering could be for you.

In chemical engineering, advances are being made in hydrogen storage, electronics and communications, and alternative fuels. You’ll most likely be a problem solver with an affinity for science and maths.
