Looking for a career in computing and IT engineering?
This sector focuses on the process of analysing and designing all hardware, software and operating for a computer system. Computer engineering, also called computer systems engineering, is the combination of two fields: computer science and electrical engineering.
Computer engineers continually push the capability of computers in every aspect of modern life and are able to work both microscopically and on a system-wide scale. Developing ways to make computers faster, smaller and more efficient; they are involved in many hardware and software aspects of computing, from the design of individual microprocessors, personal computers and supercomputers, to circuit design.
Usual tasks include writing software and firmware for embedded microcontrollers, designing VLSI chips, designing analog sensors, designing mixed signal circuit boards and designing operating systems. They are making computers more mobile and are even incorporating them into fabrics, clothes and building materials. Computer engineers are also suited for robotics research, which relies heavily on using digital systems to control and monitor electrical systems like motors, communications and sensors.
Trained in software design and the integration of hardware and software, as with most engineering disciplines having a sound knowledge of mathematics and sciences is necessary for computer engineers.
