The importance of architectural engineering
The creation of modern buildings is a complex operation requiring professional skills from many disciplines. Architectural engineers bring together the creativity of building design, the precision of engineering analysis and the skills of construction and management, applying engineering principles to the construction, planning and design of buildings and other structures. They may work on new building projects or renovations of existing structures.
Using their expertise in engineering, mathematics and physics to make sure a structure is sound and functional, architectural engineers work in teams with other engineers and architects and are responsible for the different systems within a building, structure or complex. This can include the structural integrity of buildings, acoustic and lighting planning, efficiency and design of heating, plumbing and electrical systems and energy conservation issues.
Architectural engineering is also known as building engineering, and includes engineers in the structural, mechanical, electrical, construction or other engineering fields of building design and construction. However, most architectural engineers work in the construction industry or related areas. They may also find themselves working in different geographical locations based on the site of a construction project.
