Tailoring your CV based on the role or company demonstrates to the potential employer that you have researched and understood the company and the values it represents. Write your CV whilst looking at the job description as well as the company’s objectives, and try and relate these back to experience you may have gained.

Make it Compelling

This may seem like an odd one, seeing as this is a professional CV and not a novel. The important thing to remember here is that employers are going to scan your CV, and if you haven’t provided a compelling enough reason to continue, your CV is going to the bottom of the pile. Use the first section to summarise yourself and explain why you’d be a valuable member on their team. As an engineering graduate, you may or may not have had added experience through the form of a placement or internship. Take this opportunity to include what you learned and how you intend on implementing these skills in your prospective job.

Don’t Be Afraid to Ask

Many organisations require candidates to have hands-on experience with a particular discipline, especially with engineering. But if you don’t have any practical experience (which can often be the case for new graduates), there’s nothing wrong with going ahead with an application which lists specific skills as ‘essential’. The idea is to show your prospective employers that although you don’t have any practical experience, you’re willing to learn. Even if you may not meet the requirements for the job on paper, your cover letter will be your platform to explain why you should be considered, even for an internship or placement.
