Hydrology

Hydrology

Hydrology is primarily concerned with the amounts and quality of water moving and accumulating on the land surface and in the soils and rocks near the surface. It therefore encompasses water in rivers, lakes, aquifiers and glaciers.

Hydrology engineers work with water quality sampling, designing small water distribution systems, designing rainfall harvesting schemes and siting shallow wells for local communities; skills which are very valuable when working in developing countries or during emergency relief work. Hydrological engineering can also include modelling of planning applications and the development of flood risk maps, detailed appraisals of water resources along with projects relating to rivers, seawater, coasts and groundwater.
