Civil

Civil

Civil engineers define and create our surroundings, designing and building bridges, roads, railways and tunnels, as well as tall structures and buildings such as multi-storey car parks, train stations and even athletic stadiums. This is a good sector to specialise in as civil engineers are in demand for their technical and subject specific knowledge and understanding.

Their role is central to ensuring the safe, timely and well-resourced completion of projects ranging from highways construction and waste management to coastal development and geotechnical engineering. There are two main types of civil engineer, consulting civil engineer and contracting civil engineer. The former are responsible for working directly with clients to plan, manage, design and supervise the construction of projects and work in a number of different settings and sites, while the latter aim to turn the plans of consulting civil engineers (designers) into reality, overseeing the actual construction on the ground, and managing human and material resources.

How will the world cope with the effects of climate change in the future? How will we build the infrastructure that people need for travel? These are some of the questions that civil and environmental engineers of the future will have to answer.
