The Nuclear Institute (NI)

The Nuclear Institute is the UK membership organisation and professional body for all who work in the nuclear sector. We maintain the standards of professionalism and help the careers of our m embers through continued learning, networking and professional registration. We consist of nine UK regional branches and the Young Generation Network (YGN) who have strong links with the global network of YGN committees. Of most importance to us is the education and training of nuclear professionals, and we work alongside partners to promote training throughout careers from apprenticeships to continued professional development. Working with volunteers and partners, we support STEM activities across the nation as well as produce accessible and informative learning resources.

The NI is a professional Institution and Learned Society; this enables us to offer a range of membership grades to meet the requirements of nuclear professionals from the first steps into a career in nuclear through to voluntary activities in retirement. Individual Membership of the Nuclear Institute is separated into Professional and Learned Membership classes allowing NI cater to the needs of advanced professionals, career starters, students, and any member of the public with an interest in the world of nuclear. Our members enjoy a variety of benefits including free delivery of the erstwhile journal Nuclear Future; access to a wide range of events and programmes; great networking opportunities provided through our branches nationwide; information about how to complete your yearly CPD; access to MyCareerPath; organised volunteering opportunities, and much more besides.

As part of the New Build Project, the workforce in the nuclear sector is set to grow rapidly in the coming years. On top of this expansion, a high turnover is expected within the present workforce as workers reach retirement age; overall as many as 8,000 new workers a year will be needed to support the expansion of the nuclear sector and the completion of the ambitious new build projects which are set to make the UK Nuclear Industry a global market leader. And it’s not just scientists who will be needed to fuel this growth. The membership of the Nuclear Institute is made up of a wide range of professions from Civil, Chemical and Mechanical Engineers to Project Managers to Safety Surveyors to Nuclear Submariners from the Royal Navy.

The Nuclear Industry is now entering the most exciting era of development since the first days of the nuclear power production in the UK. During this expansion a new generation of nuclear professionals will be expected to rise to meet the strict standards of professionalism and safety demanded by the industry and the public. Joining the Nuclear Institute and upholding the principles of the Nuclear Delta™ demonstrates your commitment to these standards to employers and the world at large.
