SMTC UK (MG Motor)
SAIC Motor UK Technical Centre Limited (SMTC UK) was established in 2005 to enable SAIC Group to benefit from the wealth of highly skilled automotive engineering and design talent present in the UK, especially in the Midlands. Now, as an integral part of the SAIC Motor Technical Centre based in Shanghai, China, SMTC UK is responsible for key phases of the engineering, research, design, and development programmes of all new MG and Roewe products for Global markets. SMTC UK has continued to expand, and now employs around 275 engineers and 25 designers with a high degree of automotive experience drawn from all over the UK motor industry.
Teams are based in China as well as the UK. Researching and developing advancements in engineering is now a key focus for the business, assisted by key partnerships in both the academic and business worlds of the UK, Europe and China. In 2008, following the acquisition of the world-famous MG marque by SAIC, SMTC UK relocated to the 60 acre MG Birmingham plant. After a multi-million pound investment in facilities and infrastructure at the site, SMTC UK is able to benefit from the close proximity and integration with its group manufacturing sister company MG Motor UK.
Overall investment by SAIC into the UK via the UK Technical Centre exceeds £250 million since formation, and SAIC Group has continued to invest heavily into operations in the UK, with notable projects that include the addition of a new European Design Studio and Engine Testing facilities. The development of future new Group products continues apace in the UK and points to an exciting and successful future for the Company.
