Graduate Engineer

BEng Civil Engineering

My current role at Morgan Sindall

As a Graduate Engineer within the Transport business, I work both on and offsite on a daily basis. Setting out, surveying, writing and briefing the appropriate documentation for required areas. I also work alongside a Section Engineer and Site Engineer, constantly gaining valuable knowledge.

Why I joined Morgan Sindall

I recognised that Morgan Sindall’s involvement in Engineering projects impact national and international trade and infrastructure. The opportunity to become involved within the graduate programme would directly expand my engineering knowledge and allow me to gain skills. This would be transferrable in a variety of market sectors both onsite and offsite, which is invaluable within the profession. Therefore, Morgan Sindall provides all the necessary tools needed in order for me to reach my goals within my future career.

What I like most about my job

Every day is a learning day! I enjoy working in an outdoor environment as a team member, producing visible changes within the physical world. I recognise that I am a constituent part of a larger infrastructure project, as opposed to being solely restricted to an office environment. Even at such an early stage in my career, I feel that I have contributed to current projects without imposing myself upon the team! The range of knowledge to learn pertaining to infrastructure is both vast and diverse, therefore I feel that each individual that I have conversed with during each project or task has been extremely educational. This has not only promoted learning within the entire site but has directly affected my personal growth through increasing my enthusiasm for future engineering.

My first impressions of Morgan Sindall

Thus far Morgan Sindall has provided a diverse, safe and educational workplace with the potential for continued professional development. Not only does it provide learning in abundance but all members are extremely personable, allowing me to feel included as a part of the team within such a short space of time.

The highlight of my career to date

For my first task, I have been extremely fortunate to have been placed on such a high profile project. The highlight for me has been the opportunity for me to work alongside others, as a contributing member of the South Section LAR team. This section includes several structures, allowing me to gain understanding of both the practical setting out of road construction and structures simultaneously with design. As well as this, I have also benefited from the professional knowledge and awareness that a joint venture offers.

The biggest challenge of my career to date

To have the belief and trust in my own knowledge, which allows me to be self-assured with my decisions and be able to justify them in a clear and understandable manner when issues arrive. I have also found it somewhat challenging to gain the trust of the operatives that I work with whom generally have vast site experience in comparison to myself.

How I rate the training and development at Morgan Sindall

Morgan Sindall delivers a skilled environment that is both encouraging and supportive of ambitious individuals. The training and development schemes provide the tools and guidance to reach any professional qualification.

What motivates me

Everyday poses new problems and solutions, keeping my workplace stimulating and interesting. Allowing me to learn on the job is the challenge that motivates me to be a valued and competent Engineer within any team.

If I only had 30 words in which to persuade a recent graduate to join Morgan Sindall those words would be

I have been provided with the ideal platform to grow and progress throughout the future of my career and for this reason I would encourage any graduate to pursue a career within Morgan Sindall.

Graduate Engineer

University of Surrey
BEng Civil Engineering with Placement Year

Why I joined Morgan Sindall

Whilst on placement, I really liked how everyone at Morgan Sindall acted as a team and we were in direct communication with all involved in the project. I was in direct contact with Senior Management on nearly a daily basis, and was known by my name rather than a student engineer. Knowing my ideas were being listened to gave me a sense of appreciation for my role. After speaking to a Senior Project Manager, we even organised weekly Aviation team football sessions!

My current role

Graduate Engineer for N6 RET project at London Heathrow Airport

What I like most about my job

The fact that every job is different and brings new challenges which will proliferate experience and maturity in the industry. I also enjoy the balance between site and office work.

My first impressions of Morgan Sindall

At first I knew little about Morgan Sindall, but once I researched the company I realised how big it was and the variety of projects involved.

The highlight of my career to date

Handing back Terminal 4 stands 410-412 on time. When I first started, the project was behind by 2 months, it was a real struggle but after many weeks of sweat and tears, we managed to hand back the stands a few weeks before the deadline.

The biggest challenge of my career to date

In my first 6 months on placement, I was with a mentor where I was guided. After my first project finished, I was moved onto the Enhanced Instrumental Landing System Relocation project as the only engineer on two of the sites. This was the first project where I was responsible for majority of works and got to be on the project from start to finish.

How I rate the training and development at Morgan Sindall

I haven’t really had much training as I have joined recently as a Graduate, but from looking at past graduates and their experiences I would say it is 7/10.

What motivates me

The sense of accomplishment. Actually seeing our completed works be used is a great feeling. It was a proud day for us when we saw the A380 aircraft coming in to use the stands we constructed.

If I only had 30 words in which to persuade a recent graduate to join Morgan Sindall those words would be

Morgan Sindall is a huge company with a small family atmosphere. I believe this is the best thing a company can offer, as you will be involved in huge projects, but still will be known as yourself rather than ‘the engineer on that project’.

Graduate Design Manager

Loughborough University
Architectural Engineering & Design Management

Why I joined Morgan Sindall

An opportunity became available in the Cardiff Office which fitted my personal situation and I knew how much Morgan Sindall was committed to the development of new entrants. I could see through research how much the company offered in ways of development and the opportunities that would be available/

My current role

I am working as a Graduate Design Manager, assisting in the management of the design team and process on 3 school projects for Cardiff County Council.

What I like most about my job

My job consists of working with various different professions and people; gaining an understanding of different points of view and how each individual sees a project is my most enjoyable aspect.

My first impressions of Morgan Sindall

Morgan Sindall is a well-structured, competent and driven company. There is a strong understanding of the industry and what we as a company can do to be the best.

The highlight of my career to date

Seeing the handover of Y Pant High School, a tender I worked on in my placement year at Morgan Sindall and seeing it completed on my return as a graduate. It allowed me to appreciate the work that myself and the team put in at tender stage and seeing it handed over to the client.

The biggest challenge of my career to date

Not so much a challenge but a constant learning curve. Coming straight from university into the industry, throws you into the deep end. Understanding technicalities and general day to day working is a constant learning stream that allows for something new to be gained every day./p>

How I rate the training and development at Morgan Sindall

The training and development is constant. There are always new schemes and courses available for you to go on, especially as a graduate. The new entrant team will assist in any means of development that they can.

What motivates me

Working with a strong and knowledgeable team that is collaborative and works well together to deliver an outstanding project. Also seeing the appreciation of a delighted customer when a project is handed over and seeing them enjoy their new environment is amazing.

If I only had 30 words in which to persuade a recent graduate to join Morgan Sindall those words would be

If you want a fun, exciting and motivational environment to work in and learn from, then Morgan Sindall can offer the opportunities any graduate would want.
