BAE Systems Inspired Work
Case Study 1
Going into a business role, it’s definitely about the skills you have, obviously if you are looking to be an engineer they certainly want you to have some more technical skills.
But the general people skills that they’re looking for are: an understanding of markets and customers, a certain determination, and self awareness. They want you to be a high performer so they’re looking for that drive and determination.
I think what’s amazing about BAE Systems and one of the challenges I certainly had, was understanding how you fit into the organisation. We have six home markets, customers in over 100 countries, over 100,000 employees and you’re one of them and you’re thinking, where am I in this mix?
You’re working in one team and certainly it’s a challenge to understand where it all fits together and how the jigsaw comes together, but it’s what you make of it. If you’re keen to learn about more than just one area for instance, I’m in Military Air Solutions – then you can do that, but it’s up to you to then drive that forward.
Case Study 2
When looking at companies and graduate schemes, I had a very clear idea of what I was looking for: a global company with opportunities to work abroad, and anestablished scheme with real responsibility, plus the chance to work on interesting projects, and to do something a bit different. BAE Systems filled all of these requirements. Better still, BAE Systems had never previously recruited Business Development Graduates – this was the element of uniqueness I was after.
My expectation of working for BAE Systems was that it would be highly secretive, a den of technology and expensive military products strewn around the offices. That expectation is slightly off from what actually exists. It is a hive of technology, but it is primarily computer based – at least at Insyte.
There are areas that you need special access to, but generally they look pretty similar to the rest of the office – just darker! And with regards to products strewn around the office…well, it’s actually far cleaner than that! In reality, BAE Systems is a technologically advanced company, accommodating a large number of very intelligent people, working in areas of expertise, that increasingly go beyond typical military products – it’s an interesting and exciting place to work – that is something I hoped it would be.
